Winter’s the perfect time to go to the movies. The Jerusalem Cinematheque has a fabulous program for English speakers throughout November. Here are some of our favorites!
Come Closer
The only person that Eden (20) loves unconditionally is Nati, her younger brother. On his 17th birthday, Nati plans to spend a romantic evening with his secret girlfriend, Maya. But when he returns home from school, he is kidnapped by his sister and friends for a surprise party at the beach. When everyone goes to sleep, drunken Nati tries to get to Maya, and then… he is hit by a car. Losing the person dearest to her, Eden embarks on an obsessive journey to discover her brother’s secret lover. Once the two grieving young women meet, a complex, sensual, and dangerous relationship develops. Together, they will learn that death may be the end of life, but not the end of love. In Hebrew, with English subtitles
Pulp Fiction
In what is now considered as one of the key films of the 1990s, Quentin superbly combines three entertaining, excellent, and viciously violent stories about the life of crime in Los Angeles. With tough and deliciously corrupt characters, witty dialogues that are a poetic as they come, the distinctive direction style, the brilliant musical choices, and non-linear timeline, Pulp Fiction is without a doubt a classic that should be enjoyed on the big screen. In English, with Hebrew subtitles.
Mr. Turner
A stunning portrait of one of the greatest painters in history, William Turner. “Leigh’s glorious picture is a hilarious, confounding, wholehearted and dazzlingly performed portrait of an artist as an ageing man” (Empire Magazine). In English, with Hebrew subtitles.
A Matter of Life & Death
Returning from a bombing run in WWII, Peter Carter’s plane is hit. Jane, a young American woman on the other side of the radio, tries to help him land the plane. Fate intervenes and the angel of death misses Peter. Now, believing heaven owns him a second chance, Peter asks heaven for a trial to decide his fate. In English, with Hebrew subtitles.
