 Special Events for Succot

Birkat Cohanim “Priestly Blessing” at the Kotel
Monday October 5, 2009

If you have never been to the Kotel (Western Wall) for the Birkat Cohanim, then it is a true “Chavaya” experience. This Succot on Monday of Chol Hamoed, walk to the Kotel (Western Wall) and see thousands of people recite and receive the priestly blessing.
Time:Prayers begin at 8:15am and the Birkat Cohanim for Shacharit is usually recited around 9am and for Mussaf at 10am.
Getting There:Keep in mind that the Old City will be closed to private cars during Succot. There will be an Egged Bus line from the Carta parking lot to the Kotel. 

Jerusalem March & Parade
Tuesday October 6, 2009

The day begins with family activities in Gan Sacher (across from Wolfson Towers)
Time: 10:00am-3:00pm
Activities: Shows, HOP Live!, Electric Train, crafts, artists and more.
Parade: Starting at 2:30pm the parade will walk in the center of town.

Do not plan to drive anywhere within the city on that day. The streets will be closed to cars.The city recommends you park in Teddy Stadium or Binyanei Hauma. For detailed information call 106.

Israel Museum
Entrance to the Israel Museum will be free for children under the age of 18 during Succot. Performances and workshops are an additional fee. Children can enjoy the model of Jerusalem in the time of the Second Temple, an exhibit of decorative masks and a special Israeli toy exhibit. In addition there is a special youth wing with activities and a library.

Museum of Islamic Art

Come and see a magnificent watch display at the Museum of Islamic Art on Palmach in Katamon. This exhibit is appropriate for children ages 6+. The museum also has a permanent exhibit that includes armor for horses and soldiers, that all young kids will appreciate.

During Sukkot the Museum of Islamic Art has wonderful Arts & Crafts workshops. Workshops include sword and shield making, jewelry, drawing, creating boxes, bags and designing musical instruments and clocks. Costs range from 15 NIS- 25NIS. Workshops are open from 10am-3pm on Sunday-Thurs and 10am-1:00pm of Friday on the top floor of the museum. For more details of the museum and a picture of the workshop click here.

Museum of Italian Art - Oct 4-8, 2009

Each day of Chol Hamoed enjoy a live performance throughout the museum of a comedy about a young man in love with a “Tarantale” busybody.  An experience for the whole family.

City Of David Attractions

The City of David “Ir David” offers a variety of family activities in Ir David and at the Haas Promenade “Tayelet”. Through the different activities learn about the history of the City of David during the time of the Temples. The Old City will be closed to private cars but there will be a special line of Egged buses running to the Western Wall from the Carta parking lot. From the Western Wall it is an easy 5 minute walk to the entrance of Ir David. Make a left when you come out of the gate next to the Kotel and then your first right. Bloomfield Science Museum: “Touching Water” October 2-11, 2009

Come and enjoy the successful water exhibit at the Bloomfield Science Museum. On Succot they will be offering free workshops including exhibit tours, a workshop about flowing water, a creative art workshop for kids and a family workshop. There will also be special showings of their multimedia performance “SPLASH” for an additional fee of 15 NIS. The show includes live performance, dance, music and video presentations and is about a little boy named Dani who is afraid of the water. The show is in Hebrew and best for kids ages 2-10. Children under 5 enter the museum for free.

The City of David

Chutzot Hayotzer August 3-15, 2009

The Jerusalem Art Festival will take place in the Sultan’s Pool area from August 3-15. It is open every evening from 6pm-11:00pm. Artists from all over Israel and around the world participate in this festival displaying artwork, pottery, jewelry, furniture and more. Adult 50 NIS Child 5-12 30 NIS. Make sure to ask for a Yerushalmi Discount (Adult 40 NIS) if you are a local. The festival includes concerts throughout the week. Childrens activities include a Treasure Island, Enchanted Forest and Gingerbread House.

International Festival of Puppet Theater August 9-14, 2009

This yearly event takes place this year on August 9-14th. The Festival includes performances for children as well as adults and the launch of a new book, “Fairy Tales Dinner.” The Festival uses the Train Theater, Khan Theater, The Lab, Jerusalem Theater and the Gan Hapaamon Bell Amptheater. Children’s Movie Festival at the Jerusalem Cinemateque August 18-20, 2009

The Jerusalem Cinemateque is hosting a festival of childrens movies, workshops and events.   

Islamic Museum of Art

Caricature Exhibit & Night Spectacular at the Tower of David

An impressive collection of work from over 50 Israeli caricature and sketch artists. Ein Yael “The Living Museum”

Ein Yael is a wonderful place to take your kids to teach them about the Jerusalem of many years ago. They can learn how to press olive oil, make leather sandals, make wine etc. The museum is usually only open to school groups during the year so take advantage of the summer hours open to the public. This Summer 2009 enjoy weaving, pottery, frescoes, treading on grapes, milking goats, bake pita, and learn archery and fencing techniques. Exciting tours of the archaeological site and along the reconstructed Roman Rd. For details call 02-645-1866.

Jazz at the Zoo

Every Monday and Thursday from 4:30pm-7:00pm there will a jazz performance for the whole family at the Biblical Zoo. “Waterworks” Learn, have fun, sail, go with the flow and get wet at the Bloomfield Science Museum Water Exhibit this August. The museum is filled with fun interactive exhibits for children of all ages. There is also a special multimedia show in Hebrew called “Splash” each day. Tim Tam Mischakiya

On the roof of Hadar Mall in Talpiot you will find a Tim Tam Gymboree. The area is covered and has a few fans blowing to keep the temperature down. The Mischakiya has two jumpy castles, a water slide and a blow up obstacle course. They also have a variety of gymboree areas. It is ideal for ages 1.5-8 but we did see older kids enjoying the water slide. Bring drinks with you because they only sell ice cream there. 20 NIS enterance fee.

The Israel Museum is one of the leading art and archaeology museums in the world. Founded in 1965, the Museum houses encyclopedic collections, including the most extensive holdings of biblical and Holy Land archaeology in the world.The museum has a variety of children’s activities in the Youth Wing, especially in the summer and during holidays. Children can enter the museum for free on Tuesdays. The Museum also contains the Shrine of the Book, Model of Jerusalem During the 2nd Temple and an outdoor Sculpture Garden.

By Car

From Tel Aviv: Enter the city and make a right on Herzl St and then a left on Wolfsohn. Follow Wolfshon till you see the museum on the right. You will see the white dome from the Shrine of the Book on your right. Parking is available outside the museum for the general public.
