The most popular question I receive from people about my aliyah is how do you handle the heat in the summer? The answer is simple “Jerusalem goes under water.” The social scene at the park moves to the local Jerusalem pools where kids spend their afternoons taking lessons, swimming with friends, snacking and then showering all before bedtime.

The following is a listing of the most popular pools in Jerusalem that allow summer membership. Keep in mind they will all be crowded. For a more luxurious experience you can always go to one of the local hotels in Talbieh, but you might as well take a room there because the daily rates are very high.

Jerusalem Shalom Hotel “Recently Remodeled”

This recently remodeled 1/2 Olympic pool belongs to the Shalom Hotel. There will be a small kiddie pool next to the large pool opening later in the summer. Snacks and refreshments are available poolside and they offer a special “Yom Kef” package which includes access to the pool and lunch. The Yom Kef includes access to the pool, a full lunch including appetizer, grilled main course, dessert and juice for 80NIS (Child) 95 NIS (Adult) . Breichat Yerushalyim ”The Jerusalem Pool“ ***Temporarily Closed as of Dec 31, 2009***

The Jerusalem pool is an Olympic sized covered pool with 5 lanes and a large outdoor kiddie pool and water slide. The pool grounds are right off the lively Emek Refaiim but once you are inside there is plenty of grass and even a miznon (snack shop). This pool is convenient, large and friendly. Monday nights are women only and Wed nights are men only. The entrance is located inside the building next to Super Moshava.

Locker Rooms: The locker rooms are very basic and rundown. They have private changing rooms, toilets and showers. Lockers are available to rent.

Ramat Rachel “The Pool with a View”

This pool is part of the Ramat Rachel Kibbutz but is open to the public. It is a beautiful pool with breathtaking views of Jerusalem. The main pool is a 1/2 Olympic pool 25M and there is an area of the pool that is shorter and shallower for non lap swimming. There is also a shaded kiddie pool that comes up waist high on an average 4 yr old. The grounds are extensive and include grassy hills and a kids playground with swings and climbing frame. There is also a waterslide for the kids that is open every other hour.  Sandwiches (Not Kosher) and ice cream are available.  To get to Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, take Derech Hevron south and make a left at Asher Weiner (large traffic light) then a Right at the sign for the Kibbutz and follow the signs to the end of the rd where the hotel is.

YMCA

The YMCA pool is an indoor 1/2 Olympic lap pool open to ages 12+. It is located across the street from the King David Hotel. An unbelievable pool and health club are currently under construction in the King David’s Crownand will be open to YMCA members. There is a restaurant available at the YMCA but it is not kosher.

Hours:Sun-Thurs 5:45am-10:00pm, call for details on separate swimming hours

This pool is located in San Simon on the border of Katamon and it is open for swimming lessons. There is a large lap pool and a small kids lap pool. The pool is covered and the room gets very warm. On an average day you will see over 10 group lessons going on. This is a Hapoel pool used for training as well.  There is a room off to the side with a TV usually programmed to HOP. Jerusalem Forest Pool ”The Pool in the Forest”

This outdoor pool lies deep in the heart of the Jerusalem Forest, just past Yad Vashem in the Zippori Center. It has a large lap pool and a large kids pool. This pool has a mix of seperate swimming and mixed hours. There is a large grassy area on the side of the pool and a place to buy snacks.

This pool is part of the Hebrew University campus at Givat Ram. It is a 3/4 Olympic pool with a family lane. The pool is indoors and there is a parking lot for swimmers.

Shoresh Pool “The Best Kiddie Pool”

Just a 15 minute drive outside Jerusalem on the road to Tel Aviv you will find the exit to Shoresh. This pool is almost Olympic and has an amazing children’s pool with toys and waterfalls. It is an ideal pool for toddlers and young kids. I have heard that the water can be very cold so make sure to go on a hot day. This is the place to go if you want to feel like you are on vacation and only have to drive 15 minutes. The pool is part of the Shoresh Hotel.

Another short drive outside Jerusalem this time via Har Homa will take you to the Tekoa Pool. This is the pool for Gush Etzion. It is a 1/2 Olympic pool with a covered kiddie pool. There are grassy areas to sit and relax in and a miznon for snacks. This pool has family hrs, mixed hrs, and separate swimming hrs. Take a look at their pool schedule. Be aware that the times change each month.
